When my Dad built our house in 1949, he included a root cellar in the basement. We tried using this for several years with not much success, as food either dried out too much, or got moldy.
Ever after, it has just been a storage room, and not a very good one at that, as it tends to be musty. Although there is a window that cannot be opened for ventilation.
Here's sketch of root cellar floor plan, showing planned improvements (not exactly to scale):
Cross section sketches (elevations). Note that the positioning of the warm and cool air vents may be reversed; thee cool air vent may also exit on the opposite side (east) which is cooler.
